Microsoft has collected most of the products included in the full BackOffice suite and packaged them for the Small Business Owner. Then they added a few extras just for us. The package is just like 'the big guys' version except for a few limits that have been placed on the servers. Oh, and they have added lots of special installation and operation wizards that help Small Businesses operate the system. The great thing is that we pay considerably less than 'the big guys' and get a better product.

So, how does Small Business Server help with the web? The system comes with many servers that not only help you onto the Internet but allow you to build a company Intranet. In fact, almost the entire system is geared to web connectivity. SBS includes Internet Information Server, Exchange Server, Proxy Server, and SQL Server. You also get Front Page and Outlook 2000.

IIS server provides the web platform so you can have WWW, FTP, Gopher, and more. If you are connected to the internet with a continuous connection SBS server can provide these services to the Internet along with your company's Intranet.

Exchange Server supplies a complete E-mail and collaboration system for your company. It can be setup to retrieve E-mail from a dialup ISP or can provide service as an Internet E-mail and collaboration server with a continuous connection to the Internet.

Proxy Server connects your inside company systems to the Internet using either a dialup connection or continuous connection to your ISP. It provides firewall type protection of your company. You can see 'out' but others cannot see 'in'. It can also provide Virtual Private Networking so you can connect to your office from anywhere in the world over the Internet without incurring any long-distance telephone charges.

SQL Server is included as a database server. When you add SQL to Windows NT, IIS and Exchange, you have a complete database solution for both the Internet and Intranet. You can provide E-mail service to a browser, database service to clients, and much more.

The single copy of Front Page allows you to easily design, create, and deploy your Internet and Intranet web pages.

Outlook 2000 is the client side of the E-mail and collaboration systems.
